Bunkies & Small Cabins

Make the most of your slice of heaven with a bunkie or small cabin. Classic design combined with attention to energy efficiency — what more could you want?

Building smart rather than “big” can really pay off

In addition to log and timber frame homes, Kealey Tackaberry has been delivering sustainably designed bunkies, small cabins, and log retreats for years. We love them and live in them, and we know just how they should feel.

Poplar Log Bunkie

The Poplar Cabin is a large two-storey dwelling that was created as a vacation spot and getaway for our families in popular Calabogie, just west of Ottawa. We combined it with a larger bunkie or secondary dwelling, The Poplar Bunkie. This cabin was constructed following the coach home guidelines and allowances followed in Ontario. Coach house regulations allow for a secondary dwelling that is up to 40% of the main dwelling’s footprint.

All natural and about as sustainable as it gets

The Poplar Bunkie was built with locally sourced white pine and white cedar. The resulting cabin is gorgeous and ecologically responsible. If you know us, you’ll know that energy efficiency is very important to us, even with classic log structures. We’re able to run the cabin using an air source heat pump thanks to the very small energy demand of this structure.

The Poplar Bunkie offers a supremely comfortable and flexible space (639 ft.², including loft).

This classic round log cabin features “just enough” living space:

  • integrated front porch with built-in benches
  • open concept living / dining space with efficient kitchen
  • full bath
  • full bedroom
  • flexible loft space (can be used for additional sleeping, exercise space, away space, etc.)

Bunkie & Studio Designs

Over the years we have been involved the creation of many bunkies and smaller log cabins. The 9 x 12′ Muskoka plan (finished version shown below) provides just enough space and can be erected without permitting.

You can download the Muskoka plan on our Cottage Bunkie Design & Construction page.
