We increasingly hear from folks wanting a small secondary dwelling or small cabin on their property. We’ve got solutions for you!
Small log structures are smart
You often don’t need a lot of space to enjoy nature; just somewhere snug and comfortable to give you a base and a jumping off point. Maybe you want something small just for you, or you need room for guests. A sustainably designed log cabin, bunkie or studio is the way to go.

Poplar Log Bunkie
The Poplar Cabin was built as a special getaway for our own families just west of Ottawa in popular Calabogie. It was combined with a smaller secondary dwelling, The Poplar Bunkie, that was built following the coach home guidelines and allowances of the province of Ontario (40% of the main building’s footprint).
Sustainable, natural
The bunkie was constructed using locally sourced white pine and white cedar — simply beautiful, but also sustainable and smart. Exceptional energy efficiency was a priority for our project, and the bunkie’s heating and cooling is handled by modern air source based heat pumps, which use very little energy. What a great way to keep your footprint in nature small.
Poplar Bunkie/Coach Home

The Poplar Bunkie is very feature rich for a small space (639 ft.², including the loft).
This classic round log cabin features “just enough” living space:
- integrated front porch with built-in benches
- open concept living / dining space with efficient kitchen
- full bath
- full bedroom
- flexible loft space (can be used for additional sleeping, exercise space, away space, etc.)
Other Bunkie / Studio Options
We have built many sweet bunkies and smaller log cabins over the years, including the 9 x 12′ Muskoka plan (finished version shown below), which yields a smart little space that doesn’t require permitting.
