Cottage life is about to happen full force for many Canadians and will doubtless include swimming, boating, getting sandy, barbecuing and walks in the woods. But what about tending the space around your cottage or cabin? Or what if you live in a log home with a cottage or cabin vibe all year round? How you garden in that space may well matter to you.
Keep it natural
Green Living published a short little article with some good tips on Gardening at the Cottage, which include tips on keeping it natural:
- Forget about the grass and go a little wild
- Build up the shoreline with native species
- Forget about being a neat freak – allow driftwood and dead logs to become homes for wildlife
- Go casual and look for drought resistant plants
- Fill in low traffic areas with native shrubs and grasses (some are fantastically drought resistant)
All of these points will boost local wildlife and getting the native plant mix right will really encourage pollinators.
Consider timber accented features
Using beautiful and natural timbers to create your own planter bench or other timber-themed features for the garden, dock and decks areas.
Perhaps you just need a small planter for herbs or a bit of colour.
